Dental crowns/ caps

A tooth restoration in the form of a crown or a cap could be used for many purposes. The crown is custom made to fit over the entire tooth, starting at the gum line, in order to restore the tooth to its original shape and size.

One of the most common uses of a dental crown is to restore a tooth that is significantly damaged or decayed.

The crowns are most commonly used

  • Discoloured, cracked/chipped and worn teeth - to get perfectly aligned, shaped and whiter teeth
  • To strengthen a tooth< that is fractured or weakened due to injury, deep decay

Types of crowns

  • Porcelain (E-max, Zirconia) - popular because they match the natural colour and appearance of your teeth
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Gold

Procedure

The dentist will prepare the tooth to a shape to receive a crown. After taking an impression, temporary crown will be put in place to protect the surface of the prepared tooth.

In the next visit, the permanent crown will be bonded onto the prepared tooth. In this way, you have the option of paying per visit.

Bridges

Bridges are an option for replacing a missing tooth or few teeth. It has two crowns with a false tooth fused in between.

The teeth on either side of the gap are prepared, impression is taken, and temporary covers are fitted. Next visit, the bridge will be bonded to the adjacent teeth, replacing the missing tooth/teeth.
